Forty PDFWorkspace guide

RECURRING HANDOFFS

Keep the setup.
Keep its key separately.

Move a delivery configuration between trusted devices without putting its fixed names and finding terms in an ordinary JSON file. Encrypted backups are part of the free Forty PDF workspace.

This encrypts a setup configuration only. PDFs and prepared documents are not included or encrypted by this feature.

Create a backup

  1. Open Delivery setups. Choose Encrypted backup beside a saved setup, or select a revision in History. You can also capture a workspace and back it up without saving a device copy.
  2. Inspect the full configuration. Names, role labels and fixed finding terms can contain private information.
  3. Download a new recovery key, or choose one you already keep. Confirm you have a safe copy stored separately, then explicitly download the encrypted backup.

The backup contains one selected configuration and its creation time. It excludes original PDFs, source file names, current batch values, review approvals, other history and device IDs. Existing browser copies remain unencrypted. Keep your originals and separate backups of important work.

Recover on another device

  1. Open the free workspace and choose Delivery setups → Open encrypted backup. No account is needed.
  2. Choose the encrypted backup and its recovery key file. Both stay on this device.
  3. Open and inspect the configuration. Choose an unencrypted portable download or an unsaved setup draft. Nothing is automatically saved or applied.
  4. Choose the new PDF source roles, enter fresh batch fields, preview all versions and review every page before export.

A recovered snapshot may be older than your current setup. Check its creation time, names, rules and page plan before using it. Up to 1 MiB of configuration and a 1.45 MB backup file are supported.

Use a new key for another copy

After recovery, choose Make another encrypted copy. Download and keep a new key, then download the new backup. Old backups still require their original key; this does not revoke them or alter your saved setups.

What to keep safe

Anyone with both files can read the setup. We cannot reset or recover a lost key. Files use AES-GCM in your browser and are never uploaded by this workflow. You still need to trust this website and your device. The website needs to load before recovery can start; keep a separate portable copy where appropriate.
